An Unexpected Find on Midway Drive

That’s the credo of the very charming and service oriented young couple from New York who are the new owners of Sopranos Pizza. Pizza is simple, but so many places get it wrong. Sopranos gets it right. Their pizza, sold whole or by the slice, has just the right balance, in taste and texture, of dough, cheese and a zesty sauce, with the availability of many toppings to choose from.

But that is just one part of what they do right. They’ve managed to combine the cozy informality and large portion size of a pizza place with the high quality and extensive menu of a fine Italian restaurant.

So much to say and so little space…. where to begin?

I’ll begin with the Chicken Parmigiana. They start with fresh chicken breast (unlike other pizza places which buy their chicken frozen and pre-breaded from a warehouse store) .which they filet, slice thinly, bread, and fry in very hot oil before they “parmigian” it with with mozzarella and a special sauce.

Then, of course, there’s Lasagna, the standard first impression by which Italian restaurants are frequently judged. The layers are discreet alternations of pasta, meat sauce (always fresh at Sopranos), and ricotta cheese, all topped with mozzarella and marinara sauce that complements the layers perfectly.

They also have Stuffed Shells, made with seasoned ground beef and sauce in such a way that it actually tastes light; and for vegetarians, baked Ziti, made with six fresh vegetables.

And how can I not talk about the incredible garlic bread? This is not some store-bought Italian bread quartered and slathered with a ready-bought garlic spread, but a garlic bread made with their own delicious home-made dough. You can even order it topped with melted mozzarella.

And there is so much more. The Calzones (also available with toppings galore); Eggplant Parmigiana (really delicate, with no heavy aftertaste); salads; all sorts of hot and cold sandwiches; and non-Italian foods such as Gyros, Grilled Chicken, Philly Cheese Steak, Chicken Nuggets, French Fries, and more. They even have desserts to top off your meal.

All in all, Sopranos is a great addition to your dining possibilities. Try them—you’ll like it!

Review

Sopranos Pizza Restaurant is one of those priceless delights that come from a family owned restaurant cooking their own homemade delectable dishes. Located at 360 N. Midway Drive in Escondido, owners Ron and Nastaran deliver the goods in their quaint unassuming venue (which is going through a renovation, so it’s gonna be great!).

The name was chosen by the previous owners and inspired by Mafioso fame but the new restaurateurs have made a name for themselves by offering their versions of timeless classics. The extensive menu includes Calzones, sandwiches like Meat Ball, Sausage, Chicken or Vegetable Parmigiana. The Lasagna melt-in-your-mouth awesome and they have Spaghetti, Ravioli, Stuffed Shells (meat or spinach and cheese, both excellent) or Eggplant Parmigiana. Add non-traditional fare like Gyros, Philly Cheese Steak or cold meat sandwiches, hamburgers, soups (try the yummy Minestrone) and salads and you have a grand comfort food menu. Then there’s the Pizza!

Whether you choose from their long list of savory toppings or their staple preparations of Greek, Meat Supreme, Veggie, Hawaiian or The Works, you are sure to be satisfied. The dough is made fresh daily and tossed on the spot. The crust was perfect and clearly homemade and the cheese oh-so-gooey and with the generous toppings, quite a showstopper! Be sure to sample their delicious Garlic Bread. The fresh thick bread is perfectly crisp on the outside and deliciously soft and warm on the inside. Their motto is “Enjoy Life…One Slice At A Time” and if life always tasted this good, you’d never have a frown.

Sopranos also does catering and can be reached at (760) 432-8684. Go for the great eats only food made with home-style cooking can bring. Enjoy!
